Outdoor Classroom Update: Midway Heights Elementary Hoop House
The weather was unseasonably perfect for a group of volunteers spending their Saturday morning working at Midway Heights Elementary's outdoor classroom. Midway teacher Suzanne Lenz was leading the group in renovations on the garden's hoop house. The renovations included adding doors, shoring up the ends, and adding plastic, all funded by a grant that Suzanne secured through CCUA's outdoor classroom program.
The hoop house acts as a season extender. Like a green house, it's warm and protected from the elements, allowing Midway students to work on their garden in the early Spring or late Fall. Midway students plan to use the hoop house to start seeds that will be ready to transplant once warmer temperatures come to stay.
The Midway Outdoor Classroom Committee received $675 from CCUA to fund the project. Students were involved in planning the project, measuring the dimensions, and determining the required materials. Part of the proposal also included a plan for older students to mentor younger students in how to care for the garden.
Congratulations to Midway Heights for their exciting improvement to their outdoor classroom! Need funds for your own project idea? Check out our funding application!
