In 2015, the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture and Lucky’s Market partnered to install a milk crate garden on the patio outside of the Lucky’s store in Columbia. Nearly 500 milk crates have been filled with a soil mixture and are being used as growing containers. Produce grown from the Crates to Plates Garden is donated to local hunger relief agencies and made into salsa by students in Camp Salsa, a collaborative summer camp for high school students.
The Crates to Plates Garden is maintained by CCUA’s Garden Pros and volunteers. Lucky’s Market has generously donated the space and funding for materials and CCUA’s staff time to manage this garden.
